Soviet rally brings Peace
and Friendship to Yorkshire
The SALT 3 Yorkshire Raid is set to bring together a
dazzling array of Soviet vehicles, according to organiser Allen Walker. Taking
place from 5-7 June 2009, SALT is a tour for all vehicles from the Cold War era,
whether representing NATO or Warsaw Pact sides. So far, owners of Skodas and
Tatras have teamed up with GAZ, UAZ, VAZ, Trabant, Barkas, Wartburg, Zastava and
Zuk pilots to tour sites of Cold War interest in Yorkshire on this, the top
event of the Soviet classic-car season. Representing the NATO side is an
ex-British Army Land-Rover, bizarrely crewed by DDR Grenztruppen-dressed border
guards, and ex-RAF staff cars such as a Rover P5B and Vauxhall. Even a Volvo
245, bought under the BAOR tax-free car sales scheme at the height of the Cold
War in West Germany is making the trek to visit Yorkshire’s Cold War historical
sites. Additionally, and representing the sort of car that a Lockheed Lightning
or Vulcan bomber pilot may have driven in his spare time, a 1958 Peerless GT is
also attending. With visits planned to ex-Nuclear Bunkers, air museums and
former military bases, plus a dinner to celebrate East-West Peace and
Friendship, SALT 3 promises a feast of nostalgia for those interested in classic
cars and recent political history. Find out more at
