Philip Madoc
Mr Madoc will be signing copies of his photo in the Victory
Marquee on Saturday. We are waiting on confirmation as to whether Clive
Dunn (Dad's Army) will be joining him.
Philip
Madoc was born in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, and attended Twyn School. He became
interested in acting when he was a teenager. He studied at the University of
Vienna and pursued a theatrical career by attending the Royal Academy of
Dramatic Arts. During the 1960s, he became a familiar face on British
television, often cast in sinister roles due to his dark looks and deep voice.
He became particularly familiar to fans of fantasy television, playing five
different roles on "The Avengers" (1961) and
four different roles on "Doctor Who" (1963). Into
the 1970s and the guest appearances kept coming, including comedies such as "Dad's Army" (1968) (as a U-Boat captain in
one of the most famous scenes on British TV) and "The Good Life" (1975). Although widely
respected as a versatile actor adept at accents, Madoc never really became a
star until 1981, when he portrayed former British prime minister David Lloyd George on an acclaimed television
series, "The Life and Times of David Lloyd George"
(1981). Madoc has not been short of work for the last 40 years, a rare
accomplishment for an actor, and has worked on films, radio and on the stage as
well as his prolific television career. In recent times, he has become a popular
narrator of audio books.

Gillian Bence-Jones
Gillian Bence-Jones, a great, great, great, great niece of Jane Austin, is a
landowner farming in East Anglia. At 77 years old, she is steeped in history and
says she was inspired to write Winston by Walt Whitman's poem about
Abraham Lincoln. She says she wanted to show Churchill's 'terrific zest for
life', his 'sense of realism and history', and 'his ability to capture the
imagination of the common man'.
 |
WINSTON is a
verse biography of Sir Winston Churchill the man. From childhood to his death,
this unique biography takes the reader on a journey that encompasses the
great
public, private and family events of Churchill's extraordinary and
heroic life.
To achieve this Gillian Bence Jones uses anecdote and Churchill's own
words
whenever possible. In doing so she has created a biography that is at
once
engaging and memorable.

'US AND THEM' is not a blow by blow account of the battles of the First World
War- I would not presume to be an expert on that nor on the number of
kilometres- often not many- gained or lost each year during this tragedy. This
book is about the effect of the war on the lives of the families who lived
through it. The majority of the photos and documents were lent to me by the
inhabitants of my small village in South West France and the surrounding area -
the memories passed down to them by grandfathers, fathers and uncles.
The
book traces the history of the war on the Western Front from 4th August 1914 to
the Victory parades in Paris 14 July 1919 and includes a rare collection of
photographs taken at the Front that have not been published before, apart from
in an exposition I held here to commemorate Armistice 2007.
I live in an
area that is still basically rural where people are mostly concerned with their
everyday life. When working on this book late at night, reading and translating
their letters from the Front that show how concerned they were for their
families and farms, I would often finish the evening in tears.
