Mud Men on the History Channel Featuring The War and Peace Show |
|
Isle of Dogs episode http://www.history.co.uk/shows/mud-men/episodes-series-2.html
Today’s Mud Men comes from the Isle of Dogs which lies on a loop in the River Thames in the East End of London, between Limehouse and Blackwall. During World War Two it was badly hit, as Germany tried to bomb the heart out of Britain’s trade and shipping network.
It’s not long before Steve Brooker and his trusty side kick Rock God, start pulling up the remnants of two world wars but it’s Johnny who liberates a 1911 German Mauser handgun sending the boys off on an explosive quest to learn about firearms and firepower in the early 20th century. It wouldn’t be Mud Men without a trip to their favourite place the National Shooting Range at Bisley! Johnny and Steve pit themselves and their weapons against each other in a WW2 shoot out.
Then it’s off to the world’s largest military vehicle show - War and Peace - to find out about the iconic artefacts and vehicles of WW2 and a chance to tear up the track in a drag race – Tank style.

6 months early but heading in the right direction! On a serious note, The War and Peace Show will be working with Kent County Constabulary and UK Border Agency to ensure that foreign exhibitors and traders fully understand what is acceptable in the UK. More info will follow as time progresses.
"TRAFFIC was gridlocked on the A20 leading into Dover, Townwall Street and surrounding roads last Thurs...day after a suspicious package alert caused police to seal off the port.
Port of Dover Police installed a 400 metre cordon around the Eastern Docks at 4.45pm after two men, one in a lorry and one in a van, entered Dover from France with a quantity of what is now believed to be military collectors' items on board. The men were heading for the War and Peace Show in Beltring.
Ministry of Defence bomb disposal experts were called in to assess the items. As soon as they were declared safe, at around 6.30pm, the docks were re-opened.
The men, a 44-year-old and 36-year-old, were questioned by UK Border Agency officers on suspicion of offences believed to fall under the Landmines Act 1998.
Kent Highways was also on standby to employ Operation Stack on the M20, but fortunately it was not needed.
Both men were released the next day, the 43-year-old was bailed pending further inquiries. The 36-year-old was released without charge." http://www.thisiskent.co.uk/Port-shut-military-package/story-15107834-detail/story.html

SIMON WESTON TO ATTEND WAR AND PEACE SHOW 2012 |
FALKLANDS hero Simon Weston will be among the guests at this
year's War and Peace Show and says he is "very excited about it".
The Show, which takes place at The Hop Farm, Paddock Wood,
from 18 to 22 July, celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.
It's also the 30th anniversary of the Falklands
War, and to mark this, all Falklands veterans have been invited to attend free.
Second World War veterans can also attend free as usual.
"I love history," said Simon. "And I just love the fact that
people are keeping history alive through living history and by buying military
vehicles and displaying them.
"I think it's just wonderful and admire these people so
much. In their own way they are paying tribute to those who served in the wars.
Indeed many of them were in the armed forces."
Simon, a former Welsh Guardsman, was severely burned in June
1982 when the RFA ship Sir Galahad was bombed in Bluff Cove. As a result of his
injuries he has undergone more than 70 operations and has had to cope with
severe psychological trauma.
Since then he has written books, campaigned for numerous
charities and built a first class reputation as an inspirational speaker. Today
he is also a businessman working on a range of projects.
"What appeals to me about the War and Peace Show is the
emphasis on peace - people dressing up in 1940s clothing, land army girls, how
people coped with rationing, children in old fashioned prams dressed up for the
period. I just love all that. It's nice that's it's done in an entertaining
way, not glorifying or glamorising war but making it interesting.
"To look at the scale of the Show I just thought: ‘Wow'.
I've been to military shows where there have been a few vehicles and one or two
living history displays. But something of this size is amazing."
Simon said it's important that the sacrifice made by so many
servicemen in the Falklands should never be forgotten. "The recognition by the
War and Peace Show will go a long way to ensuring this doesn't happen," he
said.
The sentiment was echoed by Rex Cadman, organiser of the War
and Peace Show. "We have always paid tribute to our Second World War veterans,"
he said. "But it's important that we
don't forget the men who died or were wounded in later conflicts.
"We are planning a major display at this year's show to mark
the Falklands War anniversary."
The War and Peace Show is the biggest military extravaganza
in the world. It features the biggest display of historic military vehicles on
the planet, a vast range of living history displays, 1940s entertainments and
fashions, breath taking arena displays and acres of
militaria stalls.
