HIGHST

THE WAR AND PEACE SHOW 2002

HIGH STREET INVASION

PRESS RELEASE: 19th JANUARY 2002

Saturday morning shoppers stood back in amazement as a convoy of military vehicles crawled along Chatham's pedestrianised High Street, to enable them to park up and form a static display.

The operation planned and executed with military precision was to attract the public's attention and raise awareness to the Medway Ex-Services Welfare Centre, which offers training courses, advice & support etc.

The Blue Abbot

The vehicles all ex military and individually owned by members of the North London Barmy Army and The Hop Farm Country Park included a Military Police Motorcycle Outrider, Land Rovers, Jeeps and a blue "tank". The "tank" a British Abbot Self Propelled Gun, is blue because it's owned by The Hop Farm Country Park and blue is their company livery. The "tank" lives at The Hop Farm Country Park, which is also the home of The War and Peace Show in July, where over 3,500 privately owned military vehicles will be on display.

Medway Ex-Services Welfare Centre Project Manager John Dunn said "Leaving the services can be a daunting experience, we offer assistance to make the transition to civilian life as smooth as possible. We really appreciate the vehicle owners lending them to us for the day, we have had a lot of positive response".
