THE WAR AND PEACE SHOW 2002

1940's Fashion show

This year the War and Peace team have pulled out all the stops to bring you a very special 1940's Fashion Show. They have teamed up with three of our regular stallholders who specialize in selling period clothing and accessories, Gladrags, Starlite Homestyle and The Dress Circle, to produce a show which brings together theatre, music, dance and fashion to tell the story of life on the Home Front through the clothing we wore. We present five shows this year, two on Friday and Saturday and one on Sunday, with special previews on Wednesday and Thursday. Depending on the weather conditions, they will take place either in the enlarged Miller Marquee or in the adjacent new Miller Outdoor Arena. For performance times, please refer to the Programme of Events for the Miller Marquee and Arena published in the show programme. There will also be a special show on Saturday evening for those guests attending the 1940's Dance with the Herb Miller Orchestra.

The fashions on display will all be original items from the 1930's or 1940's complemented by genuine accessories, jewellery, handbags and shoes from the period. Authentic makeup and hairstyles will complete the picture to give a nostalgic look back to a period when the glamour of Hollywood clashed with the harsh reality of living under wartime conditions.

Many of the items on show are for sale from one of the traders hosting the event but not, of course until Sunday. However, they can be reserved in advance. Please remember that all the clothing shown and offered for sale by these traders is a genuine original from the period and are, therefore, exclusives. They may not have the particular item you want immediately available in your size but they will do everything they can to give you that authentic period look. They will gladly give you advice on matching accessories, hairstyles and makeup and give you details of places and events where your new look won't be out of place.

War and Peace would particularly like to thank Gulsan McKie of Gladrags for choreographing and co-ordinating this year's show and Gordon Ayres for producing wonderful period photographs of our models and the fashions on display. Gordon is also responsible for the cover photograph on this year's show programme. We are pleased that he will be setting up shop in the Miller Marquee at this year's show and will be available to shoot period Hollywood style black and white portraits for visitors at very competitive prices. Gladrags (telephone 01268 410688), Starlite Home style (telephone 01483 487332) and The Dress Circle (telephone 020 8350 6518) can all be found in the stall area adjacent to the Miller Arena or you can speak to them after each performance.

To complement the Fashion show, we have introduced one new event and brought back a favourite from last year. Nick Kirby of Jive Connection returns to give his popular jive lessons each day and Jive Connection also team up with the Hop Farm's very own "Blue Crew" to put on an entertaining show of popular song and dance numbers from the war years. Add to this a full programme of other events including bands, the World War Two Display Team, an inter-cadet competition and our representation of the famous "Stage Door Canteen", the Miller Marquee and the Miller Arena offers a whole feast of family fun and entertainment.
